NUG Criticizes ASEAN's Singular Dialogue Approach, Warning of Escalating Repression in Myanmar Crisis

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the National Unity Government (NUG) has expressed concern that the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)'s emphasis on exclusive discussions between the revolutionary forces and the coup Military Council to address the Myanmar crises could exacerbate the oppressive actions of the Myanmar Military.

Highlighting a glaring fact, NUG's Foreign Minister Daw Zin Mar Aung emphasized that the lack of success in ASEAN's two-year-long dialogue initiatives stands as clear proof of the Military Council's lack of genuine interest in engaging in discussions.

During the NUG's press conference on the evening of August 29th, Daw Zin Mar Aung unequivocally conveyed this perspective to the reporters.

"It's evident that the Military Council is solely fixated on orchestrating a sham election for their own gains. This indicates their lack of interest in the international community's urged dialogue and their unwillingness to accept its terms. Consequently, persisting with futile negotiation attempts only grants the Military Council more time and worsens their malevolent oppression”, she said.

She reinforced the idea that the Federal Democratic Charter is the exclusive political roadmap that the NUG is dedicated to pursuing.

"The Military Council is employing a time-delaying mechanism to orchestrate their exit. They're attempting to prolong their current power while feigning interest in accepting dialogues. We must be cautious not to inadvertently support this”, Daw Zin Mar Aung warned.

Conversely, during the press conference on August 22nd, the Military Council asserted in tense terms that there exists no possibility for a meeting or discussion with the NUG and People's Defense Force (PDF).

ASEAN's attempts to address Myanmar's political upheaval through discussions and dialogues have drawn criticism from Myanmar observers, who point out a lack of progress thus far since the coup.

Recently, the Military Council is carrying out airstrikes with increased intensity, targeting both military and civilian sites indiscriminately. The air raid on Pazigyi village in Kanbalu Township on August 11th, launched by the Military Council, unveiled the harshest cruelties of the coup regime, resulting in the deaths of over 150 individuals, including many children.
