The leader of the junta's press division General Zaw Min Tun said military intends to conduct the general elections.
He made the statement during the 22nd press conference of the military junta on August 22nd.
“The majority of voters must not lose their right to vote. After that, there must be an election in the right way. We intend to make this election happen. Our ultimate goal is to ensure that the public can participate in the election. We must act to ensure safety. We have to make sure that the vote is complete. When voting, we must ensure that people can vote without fear and without pressure. After that, we have to make an election that is fair and correct. Once this is done, there is a transfer of authority.” said General Zaw Min Tun.
On February 1, 2021, the military junta overthrew the civilian government, seizing state power. The Chair of the military junta later announced a commitment to holding a general election and transferring power to the winning political party.
On January 31, 2023, the military junta issued the Laws and Regulations on the Registration of Political Parties, stipulating a mandatory registration period of 60 days for political parties.
Currently, a total of 36 political parties have been allowed to be registered, of which there are 7 parties that will have representatives over the entire Union and the remaining 29 parties will organize at the regional and state level.
According to Gen. Zaw Min Tun, the junta is the process of verifying if these parties are properly registered under the new law.
“We would like to inform you that the parties that have applied for the right to register political parties will be allowed to do so after the necessary verifications have been carried out. As for the points that should be noted here, firstly, there are 6 new parties, not only old parties, but secondly, there are 7 parties that will organize the entire union. Thirdly, we see that most of the remaining parties are parties that will work together in ethnic states,” he added.
Currently, the People's Party (PP), is registered and will organize representation for the entire union. The Rakhine National Party (ANP), is registered at the state level, and the Mon Unity Party (MUP) has not yet been registered.
The Acting President of the National Unity Government (NUG), Duwa Lashi La, has stated that they will endeavor to ensure that the military junta's election does not succeed.
