Vice President U Henry Van Thio hospitalized in Naypyidaw

U Henry Van Thio, who serves as the Second Vice President, had an accident at home on the morning of January 31st and is being treated at a 1000-bed hospital in Naypyidaw. A person close to the hospital community said that the Vice President was admitted to the hospital around 11:00 AM.

“There is no elevator where he currently lives. So, he just used the stairs. He slipped on the stairs, fell and injured his head. And he said he was a little dizzy too. He is now being treated in a special room. I also saw that the police provided security around the room”, the source said.

Since the military coup, U Henry Van Thio has almost completely disappeared from the public eye. Then, when the Military Council prosecuted Daw Aung San Suu Kyi for corruption in connection with a helicopter purchase, he testified to defend Daw Aung San Suu Kyi in court.

Also, he did not attend the National Defence and Security Council (NDSC) meetings organized by the coup Junta but took leaves of absence citing his health condition, according to the Military Council’s statements.

In addition, U Henry Van Thio was unable to attend the NDSC meeting held on February 1st as the 2-year emergency period had expired. U Henry Van Thio, a 60-year-old veteran, became a member of the National League for Democracy (NLD) before the 2015 election and was elected to the House of Nationalities, representing his hometown of Thantlang. He contested and won the Chin State No. 3 constituency for a seat in the country's upper house.
