Unknown armed group arrests five teachers in Weakhami Village, Thanbyuzayat Township

The principal and four other teachers at a Basic Education High School in Weakhami Village, Thanbyuzayat Township, Mon State were arrested by an unknown armed group on 2 August.

According to a local, a group of 15 armed individuals dressed in camouflage uniforms entered Weakhami Village High School at around 11:00 am on August.

They rounded up all the teachers and then arrested and took away the principal and the four other teachers, saying that their names were on a list and they had to be interrogated.

Those who were arrested were named as: Principal U Myint Zaw Oo,  high school teachers Daw Khin Myat Myat Htun and Daw Khine Khine Moe, and primary school teachers U Kyaw Soe Lwin and U Kyaw Phone Wai.

Junta affiliated Telegram channels claimed that it was the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) and allied People’s Defence Forces (PDFs) that had arrested the teachers.

The Than Lwin Times has been trying to contact Karen National Union (KNU) Brigade 6 and other PDFs in an attempt to find out what has happened. It has not yet received a response.

In recent days there has been fighting near Weakhami Village between junta troops and revolutionary forces led by the KNLA (Karen National Liberation Army). Military tensions are currently high in the area.
