Two Protesters Killed, Twenty People Arrested in Kachin State

Two protesters in Kachin State are dead after being shot by police and soldiers who targeted a peaceful protest in Mohnyin town on March 25.

In the morning, security forces fired teargas and sound bombs at the demonstration, arresting twenty people, including a teenager.

A demonstrator told KNG that security forces told them they would free them by midday. When it didn’t happen, people gathered in front of the police station to call for their release. The protester said authorities fired live rounds at people when they defended themselves.

Win Swe, 40, died after being shot in his stomach. Ko Soe Naing Tun, 19,

died instantly when a bullet entered his head. The youth was in charge of external affairs for Myitkyina Technological University Student Union.

During the violence, police and soldiers injured at least three people.

Police released ten protesters, including the minor, on Friday afternoon.
