TNLA-Led Coalition Attacks Junta Checkpoint at Shan-Mandalay Border

The coalition led by the Ta'ang (Palaung) National Liberation Army (TNLA) has launched an attack on an inspection checkpoint established in Wetwun village along the border between Shan State and Mandalay Region.

At 5:00 am on June 28, TNLA and People's Defense Force (PDF) launched an attack on the checkpoint in Wetwun village, Nawnghkio (Naungcho), where Junta troops and police personnel, along with X-ray machines were deployed.

“Fighting has been ongoing at the Wetwun checkpoint since early morning. The Junta also pounded the conflict zones with artillery from the 1,000-Acre agriculture park in Pyin Oo Lwin. The Junta resisted the TNLA offensive throughout the night with artillery barrages and airstrikes. Junta aircraft bombed the area around the sugar factory in the town last night”, a local witness reported.

The coup regime is extremely nervous about resistance forces getting ever closer to the strategic town of Pyin Oo Lwin, which hosts the Junta’s main military academies.

After securing control of most of Nawnghkio, the TNLA and PDF launched a follow-up offensive on June 27 to capture the Junta's remaining units in the town, the 114th Light Infantry Battalion and the 606th Artillery Battalion. The Junta responded with jet fighters and Y-12 utility aircraft, conducting at least 30 bombing raids that day.

On June 27, in Nawnghkio, two young women, Ma Cherry Htet (23) and Ma Htet Yi Win (16), were shot dead by Junta troops while riding a motorcycle, according to TNLA. During the evening of the same day, artillery shell explosions in No. 4 Ward in Nawnghkio injured two civilian men.

When TNLA and PDF conducted searches in the occupied government departments, they seized a large quantity of drugs and methamphetamines at the Myoma (main) police station, TNLA announced.

Reports suggest that TNLA-led coalition has released detainees held at the police station, but Shan Herald has yet to verify this information.
