Following the rape and murder case of a 15 -year girl, thousands of residents from Putao Township in Kachin State rallied to demand justice for the victim and advocate for more effective measures to combat child rape.
Ma Gwan Rein Dunaw, a 15-year-old Rawang ethnic girl resideing in Doattan ward in Putao, was raped and killed in the water reed fields in the eastern part of the ward on May 10.
Around 10:00 am on May 13, many Putao residents, starting from Doattan ward, took to the streets demanding swift justice for the perpetrators of this heinous crime, and seeking accountability for the murdered girl, a participant said.
"The rally demonstrated Putao community’s unwavering stance against child rape, and many locals joined the march. The protesters also called for robust efforts to ensure justice for the victim”, he said.
Many protesters, donning black headbands, marched through Putao town, expressing their sorrow for the girl who fell victim to rape and murder.
Putao residents brought the girl’s body with them as they protested, holding placards advocating for justice, the fight against child rape, and decisive action against the perpetrators.
According to local media reports, one suspect involved in the case has been apprehended; however, the public demands swift and severe punishment for all perpetrators as the remaining culprits are still at large.
The organizers said that Ma Gwan Rein Dunaw's body will be laid to rest on the evening of May 13 following the conclusion of the protest.
According to forensic records, Ma Gwan Rein Dunaw, an underage girl, was not only raped, but also suffered tortured, including breaking her limbs and slashing her neck before her death.
