On the evening of December 6 Myanmar and Thai students organized a campaign in Chiang Mai, Thailand to protest the Military Council’s death sentence imposed on seven students from Dagon University.

The campaign was held near the Three Kings Monument in Chiang Mai around 4:30 PM. Those who joined the campaign participated in the demonstration against the death sentence.

 One of the student organizers said, “We fervently protest against the death sentence imposed on the students. This campaign is not only for the seven students who were sentenced to death, but also for all the people of Myanmar”.

The university students sentenced to death by the Military Council are Ko Thura Maung Maung, Ko Thiha Htet Zaw, Ko Hein Htet, Ko Khant Zin Win, Ko Zaw Lin Naing, Ko Thet Paing Oo and Ko Khant Lin Maung Maung.

The seven students detained in Insein Prison, were sentenced to death after being indicted for murder under Article 302 of the Criminal Code on November 30.

The Military Council has arrested 1,3017 people across the country in more than 18 months since the 2021 coup. Among them, 90 were sentenced to death and 42 were sentenced to death in absentia (a total of 132 prisoners), according to the statement of the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP).

Students also gathered and protested in front of the Myanmar embassy in Kathmandu, Nepal regarding the death penalty imposed on Dagon University students.

In addition, the Chiang Mai University Students Union and Students Council sent an open letter with 6-point proposals including international pressure to prevent the actual execution of Myanmar students who have been sentenced to death, to international organizations including the US Embassy.

Demonstrations against the death sentence were also held in many towns and villages across Myanmar on December 6.
