Telecommunications are severely impacted, with phone lines slowed down and internet outages in several areas of northern Myanmar, particularly in Mohnyin and Mogaung townships caused by fighting in Tigyaing Township, Sagaing Region
"During the fighting in Tigyaing, Mytel's services were hit, and damage occurred. Due to security concerns, fixing telecom infrastructures is not possible for now. MPT lines can't use the internet as DSNW is down. Only 2G speed is available for phone calls”, a source close to telecommunication operators said.
Out of the four mobile operators in Myanmar, Atom (formerly Telenor) is the only one currently providing internet access in Mohnyin and Mogaung townships. This has led to an exceptionally large increase in users, causing the network to slow down.
Currently, only Atom services are able to provide internet connectivity, resulting in a rapid increase in the price of Atom SIM cards from the typical 2,000 MMK to 20,000 MMK within a few days, locals said.
"We can't access the internet with Ooredoo currently; only Atom provides internet services. Due to the high number of users on the Atom networks, it becomes overcrowded, creating strain and imbalance in the service, resulting in slower speeds”, a local explained.
The conflict that reached downtown Tigyaing started to subside on November 13th, yet sources indicate that mobile operators are still facing numerous hardships in swiftly repairing the damaged infrastructure.
