Ta’ang and Karenni political groups are calling on the international community for effective legal actions against the junta’s war crimes.
Ta’ang Political Consultative Committee (TPCC) and the Karenni State Interim Executive Council (IEC) have issued a statement condemning the junta's airstrikes, which have resulted in the deaths of innocent civilians, including children and women.
According to the IEC's statement, repeated targeted attacks by the junta on innocent civilians have resulted in 24 deaths and 40 injuries within Karenni State this year(2024).
IEC highlights the junta's blatant disregard for civilian safety, as they persist in violating the rights of innocent people amid the armed conflict.
U Banyar, IEC Secretary-2, said that it has become clear that every citizen and organization now has the responsibility to actively address and respond to the military's actions.
“Especially, the junta, which has consistently governed through fear and oppression, is expected to continue its actions in this manner. This will lead to increased suffering and losses for the people. On the other hand, every citizen and organization has a responsibility to actively respond to the junta’s actions,” he said.
During the second phase of Operation 1027, which lasted for over two months, the junta deliberately targeted civilian areas and homes unrelated to the military operation and conducted bombings with clear intent, according to the Ta’ang Political Consultative Committee(TPCC).
The attacks resulted in the deaths of 201 people, including 15 women and children, and nearly 230 others were injured. Additionally, over 170 buildings, including homes, markets, schools, and other structures, were destroyed by fire.
As a result, TPCC and IEC have called on the international community to take effective legal action from the International Criminal Court against the junta's war crimes.
Additionally, they have urged the international community to halt the sale of weapons and aircraft fuel and to enhance humanitarian aid and support.
