A Step Forward Towards Shan Unity - Ceasefire Declared Between Two Shan Armed Groups

A ceasefire was established following official negotiations between two ethnic armed organizations (EAOs) based in Shan State, the Shan State Progress Party/Shan State Army (SSPP/SSA) and the Restoration Council of Shan State/Shan State Army (RCSS/SSA).

Following a formal meeting on November 29th, during which three representatives from SSPP and four representatives from RCSS convened, a mutually agreeable solution was reached to halt hostilities and implement a ceasefire between the two factions.

"Both sides discussed and reached a practical agreement for the ceasefire. It took three rounds of negotiations to achieve this, with the final round resulting in the ceasefire agreement”, RCSS spokesperson Captain Sai Kham San told Shan Herald.

Following the attainment of the ceasefire agreement, the two parties will persist in discussions to establish the terms for a collective response and joint resolution to address the current military crisis in Shan State, he added.

"Both sides are willing to cooperate, so we will keep discussing collaboration. The ceasefire agreement is a step towards implementing this cooperation”, Captain Sai Kham San said.

The two Shan EAOs also decided to release prisoners of war and associates detained during past hostilities.
