All schools have been closed indefinitely since January 16 due to the threat of airstrikes by the Military Council in Thantlang Township, Chin State, according to the Public Administration, Thantlang Education Department.
"As we all know, the Military Council is carrying out terrorist activities, because these schools and places belonging to the public are being bombed, and now after the attack on the Victoria camp, the surveillance aircrafts have been patrolling our side quite often. We feel that it is not safe for us, so we have to close the school," said Salai Cross Thang, in charge of the Education Department (Public Administration, Thantlang Education Department).
The Public Administration, Thantlang Education Department has also warned people not to play, have picnics, or live in crowded places in the school area during the time when schools are closed.
On January 10 and 11, the Military Council bombed Camp Victoria, the headquarters of the Chin National Front (CNF) located in Thantlang Township with warplanes for 2 consecutive days.
After the bombing, the Military Council's surveillance aircraft flew over Thantlang township again, raising fears of further airstrikes.
There are 95 schools opened by the Public Administration in Thantlang Township, with a total of more than 15,000 students, and about 90 percent of all school-age children in Thantlang Township are able to attend school.
