Rising Water Levels in Belu Creek Force Evacuations in Five Wards of Loikaw City

Rising water levels in Belu Creek have forced residents of five wards near Belu Creek in Loikaw City, Karenni(Kayah) State, to evacuate their homes, according to a local aid worker.

He said: “The water level in Loikaw is rising. Since the water has reached Minsu ward, the water level must be high now. The Shanpine Road and Shwetaung Road are completely submerged in floodwater.”

He added that most homes in Shwetaung, Minsu, Shanpine, Dawnoeku, and Namkut wards are already submerged in water.

Since 'Operation 1111,' only a small number of locals remain in Loikaw City, which is currently experiencing severe flooding.

The Karenni state government under the junta control has set up three flood relief centers at the Buddhist religious temple and other locations, capable of accommodating approximately 1,000 flood victims.

The impact of Cyclone Yagi and the flooding in southern Shan State has caused water to flow into the Moebye Dam. The breach of the Moebye(Mongpai) Dam has led to a significant increase in the water level of Belu Creek.

Since 9 September, Loikaw City has faced severe flooding, affecting both urban areas and wards near Belu Creek.

Additionally, three villages located on the western side of Loikaw are completely submerged and are in need of immediate assistance.

On 18 September, the World Food Programme (WFP) announced that it would directly distribute monthly food rations, including rice, energy biscuits, and nutritional support, to approximately 500,000 people affected by Cyclone Yagi in Myanmar.
