Residents of the Gyaing River Region Fear Intensified Fighting After Thadingyut

The residents of the Gyaing River region are increasingly concerned that military clashes may intensify following the Thadingyut Festival.

The area has recently seen significant movements of revolutionary forces, while military junta naval troops have advanced, further escalating local tensions.

Currently, daily Kathina Festival events are taking place in villages throughout the Gyaing region. Mon monks have requested that revolutionary forces refrain from military engagements during this period, aiming to maintain peace.

According to a local man, despite a temporary calm, conflict is expected to resume once the festival period ends.

"The Mon monks requested a pause in fighting for the festival period. But we anticipate a resurgence of clashes after Kathina ends," he said.

Due to these concerns, some residents are already preparing to relocate for safety.

Although there have been no recent battles in the Gyaing region, residents from Kyaikmaraw report that military junta drones are conducting regular surveillance in the area.

“The Mon monks asked revolutionary groups to hold off on fighting because Kathina is a religious festival. Meanwhile, the military has been continuously monitoring the area with drones,” said a local.

Since October 1, during population census activities, the junta has reportedly fired heavy artillery into villages like Kawbein, Min Ywar, and Dhammatha. Civilians' movements have also been restricted.

The Mon revolutionary groups in the Gyaing area, with strengthened political and military alliances, have announced they plan to launch coordinated actions during the upcoming dry season.

Last year, the area saw fierce conflict that led to the destruction of over 400 homes. As residents work to rebuild through community-driven efforts, the looming threat of further conflict weighs heavily on their minds.
