Fighting resumed in Mongmit (Momeik) town, situated near the border of northern Shan State and Kachin State, involving Junta troops and resistance joint forces led by the Kachin National Liberation Army (KIA) and also includes the Mongmit People's Defense Force (PDF-Mongmit).
Fighting has resumed since June 4, in the vicinity of Manhpwei (old) village and Thayettaw village near Mongmit.
"The fighting started with an attack by KIA and allied forces on Junta troops stationed in a village near Mongmit. It's been two days of intense clashes, but things are a bit calmer now”, a local said.
According to local sources, residents in the vicinity of the conflict zone have temporarily evacuated due to the ongoing clashes.
Mongmit is home to the 348th Light Infantry Battalion, along with the 276th and 223rd Infantry Battalions, all under the command of a tactical operation commander. Mongmit also serves as a district-level major town.
Back in January, heavy fighting between KIA-led joint forces and Junta troops nearly decimated Mongmit. This time, about 2,000 locals fled as soon as clashes erupted, an officer of PDF-Mongmit told KNG.
"The battle continued for two consecutive days, prompting Mongmit residents to flee.
Given their past unpleasant experiences, their concern is understandable. The current clashes are taking place at auxiliary security outposts around the town, and not near the tactical command center within the town”, he said.
In the January offensive, KIA and joint forces managed to control the downtown area but were unable to capture the Junta's fortifications and bases, prompting them to withdraw.
Mongmit is situated in northwestern Shan State, bordered by Bhamo District of Kachin State to the north, Hsenwi (Theinni) to the east, Hsipaw (Thibaw) to the south, and Shwebo District of Sagaing Region to the west.
