Pregnant Woman and Man Killed During Shelling

A pregnant woman and a man were killed after a shell landed in their village in Burma’s  Kyaukme Township in northern Shan State during fighting between ethnic armed organizations (EAOs).

The Restoration Council of Shan State (RCSS) fought with Shan State Progress Party (SSPP) and Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) in Tawsarng village-tract.

Violence between the EAOs resumed on February 13 despite RCSS and TNLA declaring unilateral ceasefires only days earlier.  

A resident of  Kalong Wong village, where the fatalities happened on February 15, told SHAN six others who were in the house that was struck by the shell were wounded.

The woman was in the eighth month of her pregnancy. The house was completed destroyed during the shell attack. Survivors are receiving medical care in Tawsarng village.

TNLA and SSPP are members of the Northern Alliance.

In Namtu Township, a 33-year-old man from Pein Long village was shot in his behind during hostilities between RCSS and TNLA on February 14 that drove out over 200 civilians near Mang Wah village.

Fifty villagers are sheltering at Pobbayon Buddhist monastery in Namtu town, while the rest are staying in a monastery in Mansan village.

Thanks to the generosity of locals, Long Ba Nyan, who’s helping the displaced villagers in Namtu Township, told SHAN that everyone has enough food.

RCSS fought with the Burma Army in Hsipaw Township, northern Shan State, from February 9 to 10, after the government soldiers attacked the EAO’s camp.
