The Karen Human Rights Group (KHRG) declared on the occasion of International Human Rights Day, observed on December 10th that the regime’s had carried out at least 95 airstrikes and 249 artillery barrages in southeastern Myanmar during the year 2023 alone.
KHRG reported that these incidents resulted in 134 civilian casualties from the airstrikes and no fewer than 384 individuals dead or injured due to the artillery attacks that occurred in the Karen National Union (KNU)-administered areas in southeastern Myanmar.
The shelling and air raids by the Military Council reached their most severe levels in 2023.
Saw Nanda Hsue, Advocacy Coordinator of KHRG told Than Lwin Times that, "Attacks on civilian areas have notably risen in 2023, especially through the Military Council's airstrikes and artillery barrages, directly impacting the civilian population”, he said.
KHRG also emphasized that the armed conflicts and the human rights violations carried out by the Junta troops have compelled civilians to flee their homes in large numbers, leading to complex humanitarian crisis in the country.
KHRG reported that the Military Council continues to obstruct and deny passage to humanitarian missions aimed at saving human lives, along with confiscating aid materials in the southeastern regions of Myanmar.
KHRG called upon the international community to earnestly heed the aspirations of the people of Myanmar, and take decisive measures to halt the human rights violations perpetrated by the coup Generals.
As per the November 25th report from the Institute for Strategy and Policy - Myanmar (ISP-Myanmar), an independent research organization, the count of Myanmar citizens displaced across the country following the military coup has surpassed 4 million.
