Prison authorities have transferred over 100 political prisoners accused of inciting a riot at Kyaikmaraw Central Prison in Mon State, according to Political Prisoners Network-Myanmar (PPNM).
Around 2:00am n June 15, prison authorities loaded over 100 political prisoners into vehiclesand transported them away.
PPNM spokesperson Ko Thaik Tun Oo informed Than Lwin Times that his organization is actively investigating the destination and safety of the transferred political prisoners. They estimate that the political prisoners from Kyaikmaraw may have been transferred to the notorious Insein Prison in Yangon Region, or Thayarwaddy Prison in Bago Region. It is also believed that the transfers were a result of antagonism and retaliation by the prison authorities.
On June 12, a prisoner at Kyaikmaraw Prison was forced to climb a two-story building for welding work. He suffered an accidental electric shock and fell from the height. The prisoner, who was unconscious, was irresponsibly neglected by the prison authorities and not sent to an outside hospital. This scenario prompted the political prisoners to demand his transfer to a hospital, triggering unrest.
Kyaikmaraw Prison houses over 2000 male and female inmates, including political prisoners.
