Only two weeks left of food supplies for refugees in the eastern part of Demawso

A local refugee aid worker told Mizzima that with only two weeks of food was left in the eastern part of Demawso Township, Kayah State, if they don't get aid soon, there will be a lot of problems.

The military council is destroying foodstuff and medicine that are sent to refugees without permission and arresting aid workers, so food aid no longer reaching refugees.

A refugee aid worker said, “We have to help what we can buy in this region. Rice and medicine did not arrive. If the aid does not arrive again, the refugees will be in a lot of trouble."

Refugees have been relocated because of the military council's attacks on refugee camps while clashes were breaking out in the eastern part of Demawso.

Now, refugees are moving deeper into the forest fleeing and scattering beyond the reach of rescuers.

A ceasefire in Kayah State has allowed refugees to return home, but Residents have yet to return home as their homes have been destroyed and military council troops are being positioned in the villages.

He said " Villager went back to their homes for a while. There are soldiers in the village and they are harassing the returnees. Only yesterday (June 23), villagers who went back to their homes were asked to buy alcohol. That is why they are afraid to go back.”

There are more than 100,000 refugees in Kayah State and around 5,000 of them stayed in the eastern part of Dimawso Township.
