NUCC/ NLD Urge Public Sign Anti – Forced Conscription Petition

The National Unity Consultative Council (NUCC) and the National League for Democracy (NLD) urge the people to sign a petition, mobilizing public support against the Junta's forced conscription.

NUCC and NLD announced that signatures gathered from the petition will be submitted to  the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the United Nations Security Council  (UNSC), the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), the International Labor Organization (ILO), the European Union (EU), and other global organizations.

NUCC and NLD emphasized that the Junta's conscription law deviates from norms observed in other nations, lacking a focus on defence from external threats, and thus the entire populace should vehemently oppose it.

The statement further alleged that the Junta's actions aimed to coerce and conscript young individuals, intending to exploit them as human shields.

Currently, the Junta is assembling a roster of young individuals in Yangon and Naypyidaw to conscript them into military service.

According to the conscription law imposed by the Junta, males aged 18 to 45 and females aged 18 to 35 are mandated to serve in the military for a period ranging from 2 to 5 years.

The Junta has declared that the initial group of conscripts will be called up by the end of April, with intentions to enlist 5,000 individuals monthly and a total of 60,000 annually.
