NSCN Naga Ethnic Armed Group Clashes with Separatist Faction in Sagaing

A confrontation ensued between the National Socialist Council of Nagaland - Khaplang (NSCN-K), an ethnic Naga armed group, and its splinter faction NSCN-Ang Mai, resulting in the death of three NSCN-Ang Mai members.

The conflict occurred on September 7th in Lahe Township, situated within the Naga Self-Administered Zone in the Sagaing Region.

"Two members of Ang Mai's clan died in the battle, one of Ang Mai's commanders was reportedly killed on his way home, and there are a total of three casualties. We were told that Yung Aung's clan attacked their camp at night while Ang Mai's clan was on their way to an operation near Kai Shan Loung Kyan village, but now the situation is calm again”, a source close to Naga EAOs told NMG. The precise reason for the conflict remains unknown.

General Ang Mai served as the personal aide to the late NSCN-K chairman Khaplang, and on June 27, 2023, the faction he led formally separated from NSCN-K.

Following the passing of former chairman Khaplang, NSCN-K's vice chairman, Kham Ngaw, assumed the role of interim chairman in 2017, and in 2018, U Yung Aung was elected as the chairman.

Later, a faction led by Niki Suki, who had been serving as the deputy commander-in-chief under U Yung Aung, splintered from NSCN-K and chose to surrender to the Indian government, seeking peace.

In the subsequent phase, General Ang Mai assumed the role of commander-in-chief for NSCN-K under Yung Aung’s leadership; however, he eventually parted ways with the organization due to differences with his superior.

Subsequently, NSCN-Ang Mai faction operated as a Naga armed group in the vicinity of Lahe Township.

There have been at least two conflicts between NSCN-K and the breakaway faction NSCN-Ang Mai in June of this year, both resulting in casualties.
