The Mon National Party elected Nai Tin Aung, (also known as Nai Ta La Non) as its vice chairman (1) in a secret ballot held at an MNP central committee meeting in Mawlamyine on 31 May.

He replaces Nai Thet Lwin who has been appointed as the Union Minister of Ethnic Affairs.

He was selected ahead of the other candidate Nai Chit Oo, the former Mon Affairs Minister of Karen State.

When he was contacted by IMNA the MNP General Secretary Nai Layih Tamarh explained that the party had been less active recently because the MNP chairman, Nai Ngwe Thein, is now old and living in Rangoon and Nai Thet Lwin, the previous vice chairman (1), was spending less time working for the party since he had become a union minister.

Because of this the party decided that a replacement vice chairman (1) should be elected. Nai Thet Lwin will continue as a central executive member of the MNP.

Speaking to IMNA Sayadaw Ashin Thiha, an observer of Mon politics, said: “The party doesn’t seem to have made any considerations or implementations for the development of civil society and the strengthening of national activity. If they are just going to be content with releasing announcements without implementing anything practical they will not get the public’s support.”

Min Zeyar Oo (also known as Min Kyaw Zeyar Oo) was also elected to the MNP Central Executive Committee to replace the former committee member Nai Ye Zaw who is leaving the party.

The MNP registered as the Mon National Democratic Front (MNDF) in 1988 and in 2012 re-registered as the Mon National Democracy Party (MNDP). It later changed its name to the Mon National Party (MNP).

The party has over 70,000 members, 93 central committee members and 31 central executive committee members.
