A junta airstrike on the western outskirts of Mogok Town, in Mogok Township, Mandalay Region killed five locals and left many more injured, on 10 February 2025.
A junta Y-12 utility aircraft flew over Mogok Town at about 1:00 am on 10 February and dropped about 20 bombs according to residents of the town.
Mokok Town was seized by the Ta'ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) and the Mandalay People's Defence Force (MDY-PDF) on 24 July 2024.
Mogok is famous as a centre of ruby mining and the junta’s airstrike targeted the Win Hta Yan gem mining site about 10 minutes drive west from downtown Mogok. It is an area where most of the inhabitants are ruby miners.
A woman from downtown Mogok Town said on 10 February: “The death toll is confirmed at five so far, all young men. I've heard around 20 people were injured, including women and the elderly. The area targeted was a gem mining site, where many people live. The plane flew low and dropped bombs while everyone was asleep.”
Another Mogok Town resident said to NMG: “The bombing occurred on the outskirts of Mogok Town, roughly a 10-minute drive from the downtown wards. The site, known as the Win Hta Yan site, is situated between two villages on the town's edge. All the victims were civilians, and about seven houses were also destroyed by fire.”
Pro junta Telegram channels confirmed the airstrike saying that 20 bombs were dropped on Win Hta Yan in the TNLA Brigade 2 area.
Currently the Palaung State Liberation Front (PSLF), the TNLA's political wing, is overseeing reconstruction efforts in Mogok Town.
