Military Council arrests CDM teacher under pretext of overnight guestlist inspection

Under the guise of inspecting the overnight guest list, soldiers and police affiliated with the Military Council arrested a schoolteacher residing in Bogale Township, Ayeyarwady Region, who had actively joined the Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM).

According to a local, the schoolteacher who was arrested goes by the name of Ma Theint Theint Soe.

"The girl had stopped going to school and remained confined to her home ever since the military coup, but now, she was apprehended by soldiers in broad daylight, under the pretense of conducting an inspection of the overnight guestlist”, a 50-year-old man told NMG.

Contrary to their claim of checking the overnight guest list, the soldiers arrived at the teacher's home in the afternoon and proceeded to arrest her.

Eyewitnesses from Ward No. 6 in Bogale Township observed the distressing sight of Ma Theint Theint Soe being restrained with handcuffs and forcibly removed from her residence in the ward.

According to witnesses, the group that arrived to apprehend her consisted of both police officers and soldiers, along with the ward administrator, hundred-house-group-elder, ten-house-group-elders and several individuals in civilian clothing.

At present, Ma Theint Theint Soe is held in custody at Bogale Myoma Police Station, and regrettably, her family members have been denied access to visit her. She has been charged under Section 52(A) of the Anti-Terrorism Act.

The Military Council has imposed lengthy prison sentences on the arrested educational staff members who stood against the military coup, with some of them even receiving death sentences, according to some educational staff who participated in CDM.

In April, Deputy Minister of Labor Affairs U Kyaw Ni from the National Unity Government (NUG) revealed to RFA that while initially over 400000 government employees took part in the Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM), the influence of the Military Council and challenges like the livelihood crisis resulted in a significant number reverting back to their original duties, leaving just over 300000 CDM participants remaining.
