Mon State Chief Minister Dr. Aye Zan delivered his speech at the 73rd Mon National Day ceremony (Center) held in Mawlamyine on February 9, saying Mon people who settled in Thailand were involved in the founding of the Burma Independence Army and anti-fascist independence movement.
“To the anti-British colonialism, Thailand-settled Mon people also took part in the movement during the founding of the Burma Independence Army. In the anti-fascist striving for independence, the Mon people worked side by side with other ethnic nationalities,” said Chief Minister Dr. Aye Zan.
In the Burma Independence Army (BIA) of 1942 and in the Japanese Fascist Revolutions, 5000 Burmese and 3000 Mon were involved in the battle for independence, according to the historical records made by General Aung San at Nay Thu Rein Conference in 1946.
“If we look at history, there were many prominent Mon leaders such as Queen Shin Sawbu, who was the only Queen in Myanmar. Dharmsati King was a great missionary, and U Chit Hlaing, one of the leaders of the General Council of Burmese Associations (GCBA), who instigated patriotic spirit during the colonial period,” the Chief Minister added.
Yangon Chief Minister Phyo Min Thein also delivered a speech at the 73rd Mon National Day Event in the People’s Square and Park stressing that development without peace would be impossible.
He said, “the goal for us now is to build a democratic federal union that creates equal opportunity and self-determination for all ethnic nationalities.”
State Counselor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and Commander-in-Chief of Defense Services Senior General Min Aung Hlaing sent a statement to the 73rd Anniversary of Mon National Day.
The celebration of the Mon National Day is held to commemorate the founding of the last Mon kingdom Hongsawator, or Pegu, founded in 1116 Buddhist Era (573 A.D.) on the1st Waning of Tabodwe (month).
