Large urban construction projects in Hpa-An , Karen State remain frozen since the coup and unable to resume operations local sources told KIC.
Following the military coup, various urban projects in Hpa-An, initiated during the previous National League for Democracy (NLD) government, including recreational scenic spots, hotels, shopping centers, and the notable cable car project for Mount Zwegabin, regarded as a symbol of Hpa-An, have been halted indefinitely.
"Almost all the major private projects initiated under the previous government have come to a standstill. The Zwegabin cable car project, Zwegabin plaza and housing project, and Chit Thu Myaing Resort construction, have been halted for a significant period of time. Additionally, numerous other private projects have been put on hold. The Military Council's Municipal and Construction Departments are now engaging in collaborations with pro-Junta companies to
pursue new projects. In certain instances, they are merely conducting superficial repairs, while some unfinished projects from the previous government are being hastily completed with grand opening ceremonies. However the economic situation for the local residents remains exceedingly challenging, even the employees of the Military Council themselves are facing financial difficulties”, a Hpa-An resident said.
The Junta has implemented stringent security measures in an effort to establish their authority in Hpa-An. They are also actively striving to stimulate tourism in the region by organizing various events. However despite their efforts, the city continues to experience a lack of visitors, even during significant holidays, according to local vendors.
The lack of attendance at the events has adversely affected their business, forcing many vendors to cease operations due to significant losses, a Hpa-An-based vendor told KIC. "Sales by vendors at popular locations such as Hpa-An's night market and Kantharyar market have experienced a significant decline. When the number of consumers is low, the vendors struggle to make sales. Our city witnesses a slight increase in people from 5 :00 - 6:00 PM, but after 7:30 PM, it becomes eerily deserted, with very few people around. Even visitors from other areas have become sparse. Many individuals from conflict-ridden hometowns have lost interest in visiting, due to the ongoing fighting in their regions”, he stated.
In Karen State, there is ongoing conflict between the Junta and the joint forces led by the local Karen National Liberation Army. While Hpa-An and Hlaingbwe are relatively stable, the remaining five townships in Karen State are witnessing varying degrees of fighting.
According to sources from the KNLA, amidst the ongoing conflict in various townships, the Military Council's influence has significantly diminished in the outskirts and rural areas, with only limited control remaining in certain small urban pockets.
