On 10 January, 2023, the Karen National Union (KNU) from Thaton District stated that 1 civilian was killed and 8 others were injured as a result of heavy weapons firing by battalions under the Burma/Myanmar military battalion stationed in Kyaik Hto Township, Mon State.
On January 6, at 7:30 p.m. a battalion from the 44th Infantry Division fired two 60mm shells onto the village of Win Kalaw nearby in Kyaikhto Township, northern part of Mon State.
The military battlion’s morter shell exploded near U Kyaw Myint and Ma Mi Phyu’s houses. 63-year-old U Kyaw Myint was wounded in the left arm, and Ma Mi Phyu’s 16- year-old daughter, Ma Phyu Yutha, was wounded by a bullet that hit her left thigh.
On January 7th, 8 120/ 60mm motor shells were also fired at the village by the 44th
Division’s Thein Zayat based Battalion at 7:35 p.m., according to the KNU.
A large weapon shell exploded near mango gardens near Thone Chan Village, in Kyaik Hto Township, killing 26-year-old Zaw Moe Lwin, and 6 get injuries. A 7-year-old child was also injured.
The KNU has said that the the military council SAC troops are firing heavy weapons at villages with the intention of causing harm to the public.
The Burma/Myanmar army forces have often fired with motor shells into Zee Pyaung, Win Kan, Pyin Ka Toe Khome, Kyauk Pha and Win Kalaw villages in Kyaik Hto Township.
Approximately 3,000 local residents have been displaced from Kyaik Hto in order to flee to safety places due to the use of heavy weapons by Burma/Myanmar Army.
