KNDF Captures Soldiers From Mo So Massacre

The Karenni Nationalities Defence Force (KNDF) has captured four regime soldiers, including a sergeant and two corporals. They’re all believed to be part of a battalion responsible for the massacre of over 40 civilians who fled fighting in Karenni State last year.

Last Christmas Eve, the Light Infantry Battalion (LIB) 108 murdered the civilians in Hpruso Township and burnt their bodies to cover up their war crimes.

KNDF Battalions 1, 5, 6, 7 and 9 attacked LIB 108, based in Danu Phyu town under Light Infantry Division 66 in the Irrawaddy Region, during fighting in Dor Kamee, Demawso Township on 3 December. More than 20 regime soldiers were reportedly killed.

“According to KNDF’s policy, we don’t kill POWs. But we’ll take action against them according to the law. POWs are also granted their human rights. Currently, our medics are administering medical care while we investigate them,” said a KNDF officer from the armed group’s information department. Although the officer wouldn't comment further on the investigation, he confirmed that the prisoners were involved in the Mo So massacre.

KNDF captured one MG-3 machine gun, one rocket launcher, four MA-1 and three MA-3 rifles, one MA-4 rifle with attached M-79 grenade launcher, two 60mm mortars, ammunition, computer, several mobile phones and other military equipment.

LIB 108 requested air support after suffering many casualties, and three strikes were carried out in addition to artillery fire from Demawso town. Nevertheless, according to the KNDF, only two of its soldiers were lightly injured.

As the conflict intensifies in Kon Tha, Thay Hsu Le and Dor Kamee in Demawso Township, the Karenni armed group suspects the military will continue its offensive and warned civilians to avoid travelling in the area.
