KIO calls for ethnic unity on Kachin Martyr’s Day

In a statement to mark Kachin Martyrs' Day on 10 August 2024, the Kachin Independence Organisation (KIO) Central Committee called on different ethnic groups to not fight against each other.

A statement from the KIO Central Committee said: "We are dedicated to avoiding actions that might cause inter-tribal conflict and bloodshed, and we are committed to preserving ethnic unity in our struggle.”

The statement also said that ethnic armed groups must unite and fight against the military regime whilst avoiding territorial disputes and expanding into each other’s areas. Any problems should be resolved through political dialogue and negotiations, rather than violence.

General N’Ban La, the KIO Chairman, in a statement issued for Kachin Martyr’s day said: “At this time, it is crucial to unite and focus on overthrowing the military regime as a nationwide effort. Everyone must understand that issues of territorial disputes and expansion between ethnic groups should be resolved through political means.”

He also said that the KIO/KIA (Kachin Independence Army) remain committed to fighting an armed struggle to achieve their goals but that if the opportunity for viable political dialogue emerges they are prepared to explore it and engage in negotiations.

General N’Ban La also expressed his gratitude and paid tribute to the leaders of the KIO/KIA’s anti-junta struggle, their courageous fighters on the front lines, and their dedicated support staff. He also honored the KIO/KIA martyrs who have sacrificed their lives for the nation and its people and called for continued love, support, and respect for the families of the martyrs.

Additionally the KIO/KIA statement  said that it has a pressing need for skilled young individuals to work as support staff in healthcare, education, and administration. It encouraged them to apply for such roles.

Kachin Martyrs' Day is on 10 August every year. It celebrates the brave fighters who have fought and fallen whilst fighting for the rights of the Kachin. It also commemorates G.O.C Lahtaw Zau Seng, the KIO’s first leader, who died on 10 August 1975.
