Soldiers from Kachin Independence Army (KIA) burned down Yuzana Co Ltd's warehouse after fighting with Burma Army in Tanai Township, Kachin State.
A local told NMG the ethnic armed organization (EAO) attacked several large buildings in Bangkok village at about 2 am on April 1, destroying valuable equipment owned by the company closely tied to the military. Typically, Burma Army soldiers guard the complex, but during Thursday's attack, they were not onsite.
"Machines, vehicles, a bulldozer, road graders and road rollers in the warehouse were all burned. The fire was visible until dawn. There were no civilians hurt during the attack," the local said.
Since 2006, Yuzana Co Ltd seized over 400,000 acres of land from farmers for its cassava and sugarcane agribusiness in Kachin State. Htay Myint started the company in 1994, and is closely affiliated with previous regime leader Than Shwe and Khin Nyunt, former Chief of Intelligence. Yuzana Co Ltd is also involved in the construction, hospitality, real estate and fishery industries.
The same day as the attack, KIA Battalion 11 (Brigade 1) clashed with Burma Army LIB-318 (Tanai ROC) for one hour near Dom Bom Hka village, Hpakant Township, in the morning, according to a man from the area. He said the Burma Army fired artillery near a village, causing concern for civilians living in the area.
Fighting between KIA and Burma Army resumed in Kachin State on March 11 after the Kachin EAO destroyed a military camp.
