The Kayah State Chief Minister said his government wants to develop the Kayah State, which has slow economic development due to lack of technological development, via the development of small and medium (SME) enterprises.

The State Chief Minister L Phaung Sho said electricity, road and communications have been improving in the state but the government will focus on the slow development of other economic sectors.

He made the remarks during a workshop on the economic development of small and medium enterprises, which was held at the State Hall in Loikaw, Kayah State on March 12 and 13.

The chief minister added that the two-day discussions will assist in the development of the state’s SME sector.

The Kayah State has a low population, enough electricity, and a good potential for tourism development. Sixty-five percent of the businesses are agricultural businesses and rice and maize are the main products of the state.

Daw Aye Aye Win, director of the Ministry of Industry, said the government aims to discuss the strong points and opportunities of the area based on the above points and hopes for the emergence of better strategies and plans to cooperate in the implementation of these strategies

“We will only reach our goal for developing the SMEs only when the governmental organizations from across the country, the state governments, and the union government give stronger support for this development. Now, the State has given its recognition and it is very focused on the plan to support the SMEs,” she said.

The Kayah State governmental organizations and the civil society organizations and entrepreneurs from the state attended the workshop.

The director-general and officials from the Directorate of Industrial Supervision and Inspection (headquarters) and other experts discussed the drafting of a roadmap for the Kayah State's SME development during the workshop on March 12 and 13.
