Around 1,000 youths converged for International Youth Day in Karen State’s capital Hpa-an last Saturday.
Representatives from over 50 organizations attended the ceremony, which for the first time ever was allowed to be held in city hall. Since 2012, when celebrations for the day were held in Karen State, proceedings had to take place in a religious building.
Sa Shine from Hpa-an Youth Network told KIC News that the role of youth has become even more important since the reform process was started.
“Youths are the power of the country,” he said.
Ko Soe San Min, an organizer and member of Mar Ya Youth group, told KIC News that the event brought youth together.
“By attending this ceremony youths will learn how to lead, cooperate and know more about each other’s organization,” he said.
Exhibitions that were on display provided education on illicit drug abuse and environmental preservation. Special presentations and entertainment were also provided.
International Youth Day was first recognized by the United Nations in 2000. Since then it has been celebrated across the world.
