The Karen National Union/Karen National Liberation Army – Peace Council (KNU/KNLA-PC) destroyed illicit drugs worth over Ks 10 million at their headquarters on June 26 to mark the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, said the joint secretary Capt. Saw Kyaw Nyunt.
“[We’ve] burned 5,370 methamphetamine tablets called WY and around one tical (16.32 g) of ICE and drug-related items like pipes, which were seized within 2018,” Capt. Saw Kyaw Nyunt told KIC News.
He explained that the drugs have been destroyed for regional security and development of social life since drugs can destroy the future of youths and bring great harms to national tasks and the peace process.
According to the nationwide ceasefire agreement (NCA), ethnic armed organizations have to cooperate with respective government organizations in protecting the civilians, carrying out regional development, and eradicating illicit drugs during the period of signing the NCA and political dialogue.
Officials from the Karen Peace Council said the council has prohibited illegal gambling and illicit drugs in their policy since 2017 and it has been implementing the policy.
The council established a military regulation committee in 2016 to carry out military codes of conduct and drug eradication tasks.
This is the third time the KNU/KNLA-PC destroyed seized drugs, according to the officials.
