On July 14, junta troops stationed in the Kanyinchaung Economic Zone, west of Maungdaw Township in Arakan (Rakhine) State, reportedly abandoned their positions and fled, according to local sources.
"There was intense fighting in the area yesterday. The junta in Kanyinchaung reinforced their forces, strengthened defenses, and used air raids for defense. However, they retreated in the face of relentless attacks by the Arakha Army (AA)," a local resident informed DMG.
Initially, more than 200 junta troops were stationed in Kanyinchaung, but they have since fled to the Bangladeshi border and other areas. DMG has contacted AA for comment but has not yet received a response from AA spokesperson U Khaing Thu Kha.
Also on July 14, airstrikes by the junta caused fires to break out in some houses in Shwezar, a predominantly Muslim village.
"Reports confirming junta airstrikes on the village and resulting fires are accurate. The full extent of the damage remains unclear. Residents had evacuated earlier due to ongoing conflict, so there were no civilians present during the attack," said a Muslim resident from Maungdaw.
Kanyinchaung functions as a vital border trade post between Myanmar and Bangladesh, contributing significantly to the junta's foreign income.
In Maungdaw, AA has launched a robust offensive against the junta's final stronghold, the No. 5 Border Guard Police (BGP-5) battalion. The junta has responded by deploying ground troops, supported by naval and aerial bombardments, in an effort to repel AA's advances.
