The Junta's Office of the Chief of Defense Staff declared that retired veterans, currently receiving pensions, must re-enlist for a minimum of three years, with their pension benefits suspended during this period.

On April 12, the Junta unveiled new military service guidelines for reservists, stipulating that veterans aged under 67 must commit to a minimum of three additional years of service, extendable up to a total of five years if deemed necessary, with their pension benefits suspended throughout this tenure, only receiving salary and provisions during this extra period of military service.

"We were informed by phone that we are being summoned for an additional 3 - 5 years of military duty. Though the guidelines specify a maximum extension of 5 years, the implication is that we are compelled to serve until death”, a retired veteran told Shan Herald.

According to the Junta's statement, veterans who retired before age of 55 can be re-deployed for combat duties, while those aged between 55 - 67 will be assigned to rear bases, headquarters, or security roles.

"Coup leader Min Aung Hlaing is projecting that other military personnel should serve until they reach the age of 70, citing his own intention to remain in power beyond that age. However it is evident that his refusal to step down stems solely from his desire to cling to power. What a selfish and ridiculous act!", former Army Captain Zin Yaw, an officer who decided to join the Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM) said.

As per the Junta's statement, reinstated veterans will receive salaries and other incentives during their additional military service tenure. However it is only after this period concludes that they will be eligible to resume receiving their pensions.

The Junta, facing a significant decline in manpower amidst escalating resistance warfare nationwide, has resorted to enforcing conscription laws as a desperate measure, coercing civilian youths into military service, and now intends to redeploy veterans, compelling them to join its fight.
