Junta launches airstrikes on Mindat Town, Chin State

The junta launched airstrikes on three areas of Mindat Town in Chin State in the early hours of 20 August 2024, fortunately there were no casualties.

At around 2:00 am on 20 August junta jets targeted the western part of Mindat Town and Sub-Township 3 in Mindat Town.

A Mindat Town resident said: “The junta’s airstrikes targeted a school in a village in the western part of Mindat Town at around 2:00 a.m. There were no casualties, but some buildings were damaged.”

At about 2:20 am on 20 August junta airstrikes hit Sub-Township 1 in Mindat Town and an area on the outskirts of Kyaukhtu Town, about 20km away from Mindat just across the state border in Magway Region, in what is known as the Yaw area.

A resident from Mindat Town said: “I’ve heard that about 3 people were killed in that area [Sub-Township 1 in Mindat Town], but this has not been confirmed yet. I’ve also heard that a youth camp on the border of Chin State and Magway Region was hit.”

Mindat Chinland Defence Force (CDF) reported that there had been casualties in both Sub-Township 1 and the Yaw area.

Previously, on 19 August, junta Infantry Battalion (IB) 274, stationed in Mindat Town, fired 120mm artillery twice into the town’s Sub-Township 4, causing casualties and damage, according to residents of Mindat Town.

The junta has been launching an increasing amount of airstrikes on Mindat Township since news emerged that the Chin Brotherhood Alliance and the Arakan Army (AA) were preparing to launch an offensive on Mindat Town.
