Junta soldiers killed five people including a 90-year-old woman when they stormed a house in Letpya Village, Kyaikto Township, Mon State, on 21 August 2024.
Junta soldiers, allegedly acting on intelligence that people’s defence force (PDF) members were hiding in a house near to the Bae Lay (Little Duck) restaurant launched the raid on the house at about 9:00 am on 21 August.
A large number of junta soldiers participated in the raid and there was an exchange of gunfire. The elderly homeowner and four young individuals, aged between 20 and 30, were killed during the confrontation.
"Besides the elderly woman, four others were killed in the raid. The troops acted on intel suggesting that PDFs were inside the house, which triggered the gunfight”, said a local witness.
According to pro-junta Telegram channels the operation had targeted a gathering of the Kyaikto Revolutionary Force (KRF). It claimed that the junta soldiers killed four of KRF members and seized three pistols, 40 rounds of ammunition, and four magazines.
The KRF has yet to release a statement about the raid.
In July, the KRF arrested three police officers in Kinmunchaung Village in Kyaikto Township, who had allegedly gone there to drink alcohol.
Following that incident the junta arrested five Kyaikto Township residents, including the township police captain and a police lieutenant, accusing them of providing support and information to PDFs.
