The coup junta has issued invitations for war-displaced residents to return to Loikaw in Karenni (Kayah) State, asserting that hostilities have ceased and that the area is now safe. However, this claim is contradicted by reports from local resistance groups, who allege that junta troops are engaged in daily arson attacks against local homes.
Colonel Phone Naing, the Adjutant General of the Karenni Army (KA), has reported that the junta is intensifying its military operations in Loikaw, with daily incidents of arson targeting civilian homes and properties.
"The junta is simultaneously urging residents to return and resettle, while its troops keep setting homes ablaze every day. To mislead the public, the junta is disseminating propaganda suggesting that Loikaw is under its complete control. Meanwhile, its violent actions continue unabated," Colonel Phone Naing stated.
He further detailed that certain areas of Loikaw, including Hmailone Ward, Nahmbawwan No. 4 Ward, and Myakalat Hill, have been particularly affected by these arson attacks.
"Junta troops regularly leave their bases to execute these attacks, causing widespread destruction. This pattern of violence shows no sign of abating," he added.
Since late June, the junta has increased its presence in Hmailone Ward and intensified military activities throughout Loikaw. According to the Karenni Nationalities Defense Force (KNDF), more than 60 homes in the downtown areas have been destroyed by fire since July 1.
A local speculated, "It seems that the junta troops are deliberately targeting homes that obstruct their line of sight. Such acts of terror are characteristic of a terrorist organization. The junta appears intent on maintaining its brutal tactics."
Mu Se, director of the Kyay Lat Myay social aid organization, condemned the junta's actions as severe violations of human rights. "The destruction of civilian homes, built with years of effort and sacrifice, is a grievous act. The junta’s actions are both cruel and unacceptable. These violations must be unequivocally condemned," Mu Se stated.
Since the launch of 'Operation 1111' at the end of last year, clashes between junta forces and Karenni resistance groups have been ongoing in Loikaw and surrounding areas, including Myakalat Hill, Hmailone, Ywartanshay, Htudungantha, and the Technological University.
