Junta Conducts Nighttime Bombing in Laukkai, Inflicting Extensive Damage

In Dongcheng Ward of Laukkai Town, Shan State, a nighttime bombing by junta aircraft has caused significant damage to the area. The attack occurred while many residents were asleep, resulting in several buildings catching fire.

Around 1:30 AM local time on July 23, junta aircraft dropped multiple bombs on Dongcheng, leading to the destruction of numerous hotels and shops, according to local reports.

A resident of Laukkai reported to Shan Herald, “At approximately 1:30 AM, junta aircraft dropped an unknown number of bombs. The CKC Hotel and several nearby shops sustained damage. There have been no reports of casualties as of yet.”

This incident follows a recent air raid by the junta on July 18, which targeted a crowded market in Hsenwi (Theinni).

The attack, which occurred in an area controlled by the Kokang ethnic armed organization Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA), resulted in the deaths of at least 10 civilians and injuries to more than 30 others. Among the deceased was the joint secretary of the Shan Nationalities League for Democracy (SNLD) party.

Earlier, on July 14, the junta conducted two airstrikes on Dongcheng Ward around 2:00 AM, killing one civilian and injuring another, as reported by Kokang media. The strikes damaged five hotels, including the Royal Lover, Dongcheng International, and Fully Light, along with several adjacent buildings.

Despite a recent announcement by the MNDAA extending the ceasefire period until the end of July at China’s request, clashes have continued. This ongoing fighting has prompted many Lashio residents to flee, according to locals.
