An interview with Daw Ni Ni May Myint, a sitting MP from the ruling National League for Democracy (NLD), who was detained by the Arakan Army (AA) during the election period and released now.
The AA abducted Arakan State MP U Min Aung, Lower House, MP Daw Ni Ni May Myint and candidate Daw Chit Chit Chaw, while on a canvassing trip on their way to Phaungkhar village in Taunggup Township on October 14th.
The AA released them on January 1st after more than two months’ detention and interrogation by the AA.
The following are some excerpts from an interview with Daw Ni Ni May Myint about her experience during the AA’s detention.
Q: How did the AA treat you during over two months’ detention?
A: The AA treated us well. The AA questioned us about the facts they wanted to know, and the army. Most of the questions are linked to our personal affairs.
Q: What was the question about the army?
A: The AA asked whether we had relations with the army. We have no relations with the army.
Q: What is your view on the AA’s abduction and interrogation?
A: The AA told us we were detained as a matter of political necessity. I don’t want to talk about the rest. But I worry that youth who get involved in politics will hesitate to run for election because this incident may scare them.
Q: Do you have anything to say about missing the chance to compete in the election?
A: Now the election is completed. I don’t want to talk about it. I am glad for the winning candidate.
Q: Would you like something to add?
A: I have nothing special to say. I have known after being released the fact that some organizations and the Nippon Foundation carried out discussions and negotiations. I would like to thank all the people for paying for the release of all detainees.
