Intense Fighting at the Entrance of Hpakant Town Injures Two Amid Heavy Artillery Fire

Intense fighting near Kyangut village at the entrance of Hpakant town in Kachin State has continued for three days, extending into the afternoon of 6 September.

Heavy artillery shelling struck Hpakant town this morning amidst ongoing gunfire, resulting in injuries to two civilians, according to residents.

Since September 4, intense fighting has erupted between the junta forces and the allied Kachin Independence Army (KIA) and Kachin People's Defense Forces (KPDF). The junta forces, consisting of over 100 troops, advanced from the strategic hills of Hpakant towards Kyangut village in the eastern part of Hpakant town. The KIA and KPDF have been engaged in fierce clashes to halt their advance.

A Hpakant resident said: “ Intense fighting has been ongoing for three consecutive days. Heavy artillery fire has also been continuously exchanged from the Hpakant strategic hill, and there are reports of casualties on the junta side."

According to residents monitoring the situation, the fighting began when the junta forces launched an offensive to recapture the western part of Hpakant, which is under the territorial control of the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) and KPDF.

Over 1,000 residents from nearby villages have been displaced due to the ongoing fighting.

In mid-August, the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) and Kachin People's Defense Forces (KPDF) captured the strategic Lamaung and Tawmaw bases, which were considered the highest and most critical defensive positions in Hpakant.

Most of the junta's bases around Hpakant town have been captured by the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) and Kachin People's Defense Forces (KPDF), establishing control over the area. However, strategic positions such as Kamse Strategic Hill, Hpakant Strategic Hill, Hpakant Police Station, Sinetaung Base, Lalpyin Base, and Aung Ba Lay Camp remain under junta control.
