IDPs from Matupi Township in Chin State can now return

The Matupi Township People's Administration announced that it has made the necessary preparations to resettle people previously displaced from the Matupi Town in Chin State back into the town.

The Matupi Township Administration announced on 8 August 2024 that the necessary administrative, sanitation, and water supply work in Matupi Town had been completed.

Landmines have been cleared from major roads, and areas still awaiting clearance have been temporarily closed off.

Some of those displaced from Matupi Town have already started to return.

Ko Bwe Oak, a spokesperson for the 1st Brigade of the  Matupi Chinland Defence Force (Matupi CDF) said: “The displaced people started returning only after the Matupi Township Administration made its announcement. Some have returned by motorcycle. We have provided printed documents outlining what the displaced people need to know. However, we have not yet compiled a list of how many have returned.”

The Township People’s Administration said that the reconstruction of Matupi Town is still underway and it urged all residents to help and contribute to the reconstruction.

On 9 June 2024 the Chin Brotherhood Alliance and the Arakan Army (AA) started attacking the junta’s strategic headquarters and its Light Infantry Battalion (LIB) 304 and Infantry Battalion (IB) 140 bases in Matupi Town. By 29 June they had seized the headquarters and both bases.

Many residents had already left Matupi Town before the fighting started. Some sought shelter in Mizoram State in India.
