Due to continuous heavy rainfall, rivers and streams have overflowed across Kayin(a.k.a)Karen and Mon States, causing flooding in nine townships. Social assistance organizations report that residents are experiencing severe flooding.
Due to heavy rain, rivers including the Thaungyin (Moei), Thanlwin (Salween), and Bilin, as well as streams such as Zami and Kawkareik, have overflowed starting from 10 September.
This has led to flooding in low-lying areas and villages within the townships of Myawaddy, Kawkareik, Hpa-an, Kyainseikgyi, Thanbyuzayat, Kyaikmaraw, Thaton, Bilin, and Kyaithto.
The Thaungyin River has risen significantly, leading to flooding in low-lying areas including Ward (1), Ward (2), and Ward (3) in Myawaddy town, located on the Thailand-Myanmar border. Residents are being relocated to monasteries with the assistance of social organizations.
A source said: “ Almost all low-lying areas in Myawaddy town are at risk. As of 10 a.m. today, the water level is still rising. Although the rain has stopped, the water has not yet receded.”
Flood-affected residents are being temporarily sheltered at the Tawya, Kyakhattaw, and Koenawin Monasteries.
According to the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology under the junta control, measurements indicate that the water level of the Thaungyin River in Myawaddy Township is about ten feet above the critical water level at 7:30 a.m. today (September 11).
Similarly, the Thanlwin River has reached a critical level in Hpa-an Township. Flooding is affecting not only riverside roads and low-lying areas but also highways.
Flooding has also affected low-lying areas in Bilin Town. According to a representative from a social assistance organization, a rescue camp has been established at the Bilin Sports Hall.
He said to Mizzima: “ The situation on Padauk road in Kanthaya Ward is quite severe. All 35 homes in the area are completely flooded. It is not possible to stay there. However, the remaining wards still have some shelterable areas. The water level has exceeded the critical level.”
The Department of Meteorology and Hydrology has issued a warning that heavy rain is expected to continue across most regions in Myanmar, including Mon State and Kayin State, until this evening.
Currently, in addition to Kayin and Mon States, flooding is also affecting Shan State, Mandalay Region, Bago Region, and some townships in Naypyitaw, the Capital of Myanmar.
