Gold Brooches offer to previous Academy Award Winners – a bribe to boost the attendance at Military Council’s Academy Awards 2023

The Military Council will hold the Motion Picture Academy Awards for the three years of 2019, 2020, and 2022 on May 6, and a genuine gold brooch will be given to those who have already won the Academy Award, an official from the film community said.

“Myanmar Motion Picture Organization will present Academy gold brooches made of real gold to artists and professionals who have already received the Academy Award, who will again attend the ceremony. It is written in the invitation that the award will be presented in the Red Carpet gold brooch room. It can be considered as an incentive for those who have already received the academy to attend,” he said.

An open-air theater located near City Hall in Naypyidaw will host the Academy Awards for the first time. The Academy Awards have been suspended since 2019 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The upcoming award ceremony, scheduled to be held soon, will cover a three-year period, including the years 2019, 2020, and 2022.

According to the artist community, the Military Council is pressuring artists and professionals to attend the ceremony, in order to increase attendance at the Academy Awards.

“They want to show that their event is crowded, so they have to put pressure on the artists. There are also artists who have been released from prison but on bail," said a person close to the artists.

According to the Motion Picture Organization, there have been approximately 120 Academy Award winners from the time the Myanmar Motion Picture Academy Awards were first held until 2018.
