Gambling Dens Protected by the Military Junta Remain Widespread in Mon State

In Mon State, gambling dens operated with security provided by groups under the military council are active not only in rural areas but also in urban areas, according to local sources.

Since the Thadingyut festival period, gambling dens have been operating daily alongside theatrical performances in neighborhoods and villages across Paung, Thaton, Kyaikmayaw, Chaungzon, Mudon, and Mawlamyine townships without any association with festivals.

These gambling activities are reportedly secured by the pro-military Pyusawhti Militias and soldiers under the military council, who are said to collect up to 300,000 kyats per gambling den.

In particular, in Mawlamyine's urban neighborhoods, where movements are strictly monitored, there are reports of unrestricted access to gambling dens without inspections, according to a local resident.

"Every neighborhood in the city operates these dens in rotation. The gambling stalls are long and well-guarded by Pyusawhti [pro-military militias and security personnel. They are active in Kwin Chaung, Daw Lan, Daw Pu, and Aung Thukha areas. If you mention you're going to the events, you're allowed in without scrutiny," the resident said.

Similarly, in at least five villages in Paung Township, groups under the military council have reportedly collaborated with contractors to operate gambling dens for months, integrating them with local festivals, a Paung resident reported.

"There are about five of them. They attach names of festivals to these events, such as freedom celebrations or even Karen New Year recently, to justify their activities. In Kataik village, one gambling den has been running for a month. They issue permits under the pretense of hosting festivals and operate both day and night, with the military and police providing security. They collect money from these events," the resident added.

During these challenging times, marked by scarce job opportunities and growing pressure, allowing gambling activities is seen as enabling an environment conducive to theft and crime, the resident noted.

According to a Thaton People's Defense Force official, the military council's focus on gambling rather than traditional festivals celebrated before the coup is viewed as an intentional strategy to disrupt societal norms. He urged the public to refrain from participating in such activities.

"I want to remind the public to avoid prioritizing entertainment, festivities, and gambling. Such activities often lead to subsequent issues like theft, robbery, and burglary. This is concerning for honest citizens. To speak openly, participation in the revolution in Mon State has been relatively low, which is also a result of the military council's manipulation," he said.

Additionally, reports indicate that gambling dens involve drug use, illegal moneylending, and the trading of stolen motorcycles and goods.

Villages along the border between Mon and Karen states are also reportedly being pressured by military council units to host festivals, including gambling activities, raising concerns among locals.
