Food Crisis Grips Over 50 War Refugee Camps in Western Demoso

More than 50 war refugee camps located in the western parts of Demoso Township in Karenni (Kayah) State require immediate food assistance, as emphasized by aid workers dedicated to assisting those displaced by the conflict.

According to an aid worker, it has been over two months since food supplies reached the camps, leading to an increasingly challenging situation for the sustainability of war-displaced people with each passing day.

"The big issue is that prices for things we need have shot up. The cost of stuff has gone up by one or two times from before. A bag of rice now costs around 100000 kyats in that area. Another problem is that the Military Council soldiers stop and control the food that's supposed to reach the war refugees. They won't even let rice, oil, and salt move between Loikaw and Demoso. It's all because of their plan they call Four-Cut”, he told Kantarawaddy Times.

The Military Council's checkpoints now have stricter inspections than before, and they are closely watching food deliveries.

"When these blockages get tighter, it becomes really hard for both of us, the charities helping refugees, and the people giving donations. The risk of running out of food in the camps becomes a big problem”, the aforementioned aid worker added.

Due to the ongoing conflict, many local people in Karenni State have fled their homes and lack employment opportunities, leading them to rely on their limited stored food for sustenance, war refugees said.

"Right now, a lot of the refugee camps in the western part of Demoso don't have much food left. There aren't as many donors as before. In most camps, it's been about two months since donors last cam. It's been almost four months since donors visited our camp”, a war-displaced individual told Kantarwaddy Times.

In the western parts of Demoso, over 150000 people have been forced to leave their homes due to the war, and as time goes on, the number of donors has declined, resulting in a growing issue of food scarcity among the refugees.
