Deadly Shelling by Military Council in Northern Shan State Claims A Woman's Life and Injures 3 Others

Artillery shells launched by the Military Council resulted in the immediate death of one local resident and caused injuries to three others in Namhpatkar village, situated in Kutkai Township within northern Shan State.

"A shell landed in Ward No.1, causing an explosion and injuring a local man and a woman. Additionally, another artillery round in Hopong led to the on the spot death of a woman and caused injury to a man”, a local told NMG.

The local added that the Military Council is indiscriminately firing artillery at residential areas without any clear justification.

"There was no fighting near Namhpatkar yesterday. But, in an odd incident, an unfamiliar person in mufti fired a gun into the sky while riding a motorcycle on Union Road. It's uncertain if the Military Council's shelling was related to that incident. However, there was definitely no fighting in the area yesterday”, he said.

On August 30th, the Military Council's arbitrary shelling without any fighting led to injuries and deaths among the local population, and the injured were subsequently taken to Kutkai Hospital, with their conditions reported as non-critical, according to local sources.

On August 29th, following reports of Palaung State Liberation Front/Ta'ang National Liberation Army (PSLF/TNLA) troops potentially entering Namhpatkar, the Military Council indiscriminately launched artillery shells in the vicinity.

As a result of that artillery attack, shells from Namhpatkar's No. 3 and No. 4 positions landed in four different wards, causing explosions that resulted in the destruction of several houses.

On that very day, a clash ensued between the Military Council and TNLA in Seilant village, situated in Muse Township, leading to the injury of two local men caught in the crossfire and causing damage to three houses.

As a result of the conflict, over 2000 residents of Seilant have temporarily evacuated to Muse and Namhkam townships, with the displaced individuals requiring immediate aid such as food and other forms of assistance, locals said.
