Chinland Council and Chin Brotherhood Alliance to hold talks in India

The Chinland Council (CC) and the Chin Brotherhood Alliance (CBA), two revolutionary forces from Chin State, will hold a meeting in New Delhi City, India, to discuss political and military conflicts, in the near future.

The announcement was made during a Chin Brotherhood Alliance 15 August 2024 online press conference. It was announced that the meeting would be mediated by the Crisis Management Initiative (CMI) organisation. Though the conference was announced no dates were given for when it would be held.   

Despite both being Chin Sate revolutionary forces, there has recently been conflict and even armed clashes between the Chinland Council and its allies and the Chin Brotherhood and its allies.

During the battle for Matupi Town in June and July 2024, there were exchanges of fire between the Chinland Council forces and the Chin Brotherhood Alliance forces that resulted in casualties on both sides.

A Chin Brotherhood spokesman Ko Robert said on 15 August: "Regarding coordination with the Chinland Council, the initial stages included some online discussions. Next week, in New Delhi, the Crisis Management Initiative (CMI) organisation will lead a meeting involving both parties to facilitate coordination. Given the current political situation where communication between individuals is strained, we, as the Chin Brotherhood Alliance, are preparing measures to address this issue.”

Representatives of the Chin Brotherhood Alliance also said during the press conference that they are ready to negotiate resolutions to the political conflict between the two groups if negotiations are mediated by a third party, such as CMI, which can ensure negotiations are unbiased and that all parties are allowed to participate equally.

Chinland Council member and Chin National Front (CNF) spokesperson, Salai Htet Ni stated that they will take part in the CMI mediated negotiations and act on any recommendations decided on at the meeting.

He said: “At the moment we don’t have a specific date for the meeting. Our goal is to achieve the best possible resolution for the Chin conflict. We will proceed based on the outcomes of the meeting.”

The CMI is an independent, non-profit organisation dedicated to resolving conflicts through negotiations and mediation based in Helsinki, Finland. It was founded in 2000 by Nobel Peace Prize laureate and former Finnish President Martti Ahtisaari.
