Seven candidates will be competing for the post of Chin Affairs Minister for Sagaing Region in the forthcoming Burmese elections on 8 November.
According to the Kalay District Election Commission Office they are: Dr. Kham Cin Dal from the Chin National Democratic Party, U Lian Nawn from the Chin League of Democracy, U In Khan Go from the Zomi League of Democracy, U Lal Do Thang from National League of Democracy, U Khual Thiau from Union Solidarity and Development Party, and U Thawng Za Pau from Ethnic United Party
The first four of the above named are from Chin political parties, while the last three are members of national parties contesting the election throughout the country.
In the last election in 2010 U No Than Kap from the Chin Development Party; U Enoch an Independent and a Union Solidarity Party candidate contested for the position of Chin Affairs Minister in Sagaing Region. U No Than Kap was elected to the post.
A local from Kalamyo said: "The election for the seat of Chin Affairs Minister in the upcoming November election will be a crucial fight. I think it will be a very exciting event."
Under Burma's constitution any ethnic group which makes up more than 0.1 percent of a state or region's population are entitled to an ethnic affairs minister for their ethnicity.
Sagaing Region borders the north east of Chin State.
