KFW development bank in Germany will support the reconstruction of roads and bridges, which were destroyed by flood in last year, in Kalaymyo, Sagaing Region during 2017-2018 financial years.

German development bank will provide USD 10 million, for the construction of Segyi and Nattagha bridges, and for the construction of the road between Dowanchaung – Yazachu village, Second – Shataw villages, and of the roads in Nanmaungchaung village, Mhanglongchuang village ang Zichaung Yikyaw village where Chin people are located, said Pi Siami, member of Pyithu Hluttaw.

“Field study has done. Now the list of data is being submitted to village development department; then village development and KFW development bank will sign agreement letter after they finalized to start the work,” she added.

According to a press release by KfW Development Bank on 20 May 2014, KfW signed an agreement in Myanmar on improving the infrastructure in rural areas of the country. The Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) has provided a grant in the amount of EUR 7 million.

"The programme is aimed at expanding the rural infrastructure, especially roads and bridges. This will improve the often very poor population's access markets, schools and health care facilities. Farmers will be able to sell their produce since traders will be able to reach them with less difficulty. Experience with comparable projects in neighbouring countries leads us to expect that the income of the population will increase significantly, while the frequently oppressive poverty can be reduced," the press release says.

German Financial Cooperation with Myanmar has thus begun again after a 25-year hiatus. Since spring 2014, KfW has been operating from its office in Yangon.
